St. George’s Funday 2012

dsc_2911.jpgThe 2012 Wheatley St.George’s Community Funday took place on Saturday 21st April, with around 700 people coming along for the afternoon.  As in previous years, the story of St. George and the dragon was re-enacted, as our gallant hero vanquished his foe once more - with more than a little help from a band of brave villagers! The old favourites, such as face painting and the bouncy castle, were as popular as ever. As ever, thanks to the generosity of our many sponsors, the Funday was provided free to all who came.

Concerned that the event followed hard on the heels of the wettest week for months, we were blessed with dry weather, and we even enjoyed patches of beautiful spring sunshine. The rain held off until 2 minutes from the end of the festival!

Thdsc_2887.jpge inflatable slide was a hit as usual with young children, the climbing wall was busy all day and the Aunt Sally attracted many visitors. There was even an opportunity to stroke a bird of prey and meet an extremely noisy Raven chick. Meanwhile, the centre games team served up a real variety of activities, culminating in a very competitive tug-of-war. Many took the opportunity to chat and watch the fun, relaxing with a cup of tea and excellent home-baked cake.

The event was run by an energetic and enthusiastic band of volunteers, including many from the local churches, and was coordinated by Fusion Youth & Community. It was designed to help strengthen community life in Wheatley, to provide a safe and accepting place where people could make new friends and renew old acquaintances. It was also an opportunity for local Christians and others of like mind to work together to love and serve others in a very practical way and, in doing so, model what it is to be a caring and accepting community.
